A BOYS College lesson template has been created to support parents, teachers, and administrators to advance the reading, writing, intellectual and personal development of African American boys. Each lesson has seven components. The seven components focus on concept of reading, decoding , reading fluency, comprehension monitor, close reading of two texts, and writing. Video and audio supports are provided for each lesson. All students, both struggling and non-struggling readers and writers , should complete all lesson components because it is the integration of the components that lead to exponential reading, writing, and intellectual growth. Each student will receive multiple benefits from the lessons and carefully selected texts.
Text is the most important component of the lesson. Serious consideration is given to the potential roles of texts to shape an academic, personal, or community agenda for the boys. Attention is also given to the likelihood the boys will be well-served by the texts and have opportunities to experience rich and powerful language, new ideas, and contemporary and historical knowledge.
BOYS College instructors pace the lessons to keep the students mentally and personally engaged while affording some autonomy to navigate through each lesson. Each lesson is dynamic and highly interactive.
